Reports to: Action Corps Director
Summary: Action Corps, a grassroots humanitarian education and advocacy organization, seeks a Yemen campaigner. The position will involve working with grassroots activists and DC-based organizations to build support for policy change to end U.S. complicity in the war on Yemen, with a particular emphasis on campaigning for a Yemen War Powers Resolution as a lever to ending the Saudi-imposed blockade of Yemen. With recent threats to the U.S.-Saudi relationship, and the October ending of the ceasefire truce in Yemen, this is a key moment for action. Sen. Menendez, as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is a key actor.

Where is Action Corps Active? Action Corps brings together diverse actors for humanitarian advocacy, connecting grassroots activists to NGOs, media and members of Congress. What has Action Corps Achieved? Action Corps played a pivotal role in the 2018 and 2019 passage of a historic bipartisan Yemen War Powers Resolution to stop U.S. participation in the devastating war in Yemen. (The resolution was vetoed by Trump.) Since 2020, Action Corps has led the grassroots effort that led to the House of Representatives passing global COVID relief legislation and an international financial institution releasing resources for lower-income countries. Action Corps has achieved these victories via rallies, op-eds, letters to the editor, community forums, and letters, phone calls, visits to elected officials, and most importantly, coalitions that included activists, nuns, farmers, big organizations, and people across the political spectrum.

Tasks Include:
• Quickly build relationships with faith, peace, Libertarian, political and community leaders in New Jersey to engage staff of members of Congress, particularly Sen. Menendez (NJ), and Rep. Meeks (NY) in advocating for a Yemen War Powers Resolution, particularly through meetings and rallies. Host at least two online meetings of people in New Jersey interested in organizing for this short-term campaign.
• Organize day-before-Thanksgiving vigils with theme, “No Famine while Congress Feasts,” in line with this call to protest: bit.ly/CallToProtest2022. Repeat and make larger for Human Rights Day on December 10.
• Identify organizations to sign onto call-to-protest and support this campaign. Communicate case for a Yemen War Powers Resolution to people in-person, online, and via letters to the editor and op-eds in New Jersey. (Involves drafting letters to the editor and finding people in New Jersey willing to submit them.)
• Identify and attend public events to build support for campaign.
Deliverables:
These are targets. The grid below provides the maximum compensation for completion of each target.
1. Submission of handwritten letters to members of Congress from 20 constituents
2. Publication of 3 letters to the editor from 3 distinct individuals in 3 distinct publications
3. 10 organizational endorsements of a call to gather similar to this bit.ly/CallToProtest2022.
4. 1 private meeting, or public event, with a target member of Congress (or their staff) and at least 1 additional person who is a constituent
5. 2 op-eds or news stories in local news outlet(s)
6. 1 sign-on letter from 10 organizations and/or leaders within the district
Compensation
Base pay: $15-$20/hour, depending on experience
Bonus: $100 bonus offered for each deliverable achieved on above list.

Position Summary:

- Work closely with the Action Corps director, Action Corps’ Yemen campaign coordinator, a national coalition co-led by Action Corps, local Action Corps organizers, and other organizations to develop and implement a campaign strategy to move Sen. Menendez and other legislators in New York and New Jersey to become co-sponsors of the Yemen War Powers Resolution. Activities include meetings with members of Congress, letters to the editor, and other grassroots efforts to achieve our policy goals.
- Participate in 1:1 and/or small group calls with Action Corps central leadership at least once a week.
- In coordination with Action Corps’ director and corresponding policy lead, engage with regional allied organizations as a representative of Action Corps.
- Assist in building the capacity of grassroots and citizen advocates who care about global humanitarian concerns, particularly as they relate to campaign.
- Provide updated content for central social media accounts, website, and email platform at least once weekly for campaign.
- Other duties as assigned, which may include note taking, scheduling, calling allied organizations, drafting text for emails, research, and other activities.
Desired Experience and Attributes:
- One to two years minimum experience campaigning or community organizing
- Self starter with willingness to draw on existing contacts and community to build momentum for campaigns
- Strong goal setting and follow-through, and willingness to ask people for commitment to action and to follow up with them for results
- Collaborative spirit with strong communication skills, willing to work in bipartisan fashion, with people from diverse organizations
- Self-care practices including clear communication of capacity, boundaries, and need for support
